We often discuss the fact that Parquet is decorative, beautiful and a real statement for any home. Never was this more prevalent that when we visited this clients house in Lancashire. Character in homes is really unique and often a challenge to recreate. It is therefore really important to take advantage of all the assets your home has.
Alongside the parquet floors in this home, there were many other beautiful characterful features. From the skirting boards, panelling, original elements, radiators and careful consideration for colour choices. All brought together created a beautiful home.
Refinishing parquet floors demands experience and understanding. A lot of work needs to go into the preparation of the floor.
Refinishing Parquet Floors – Preparing a floor for sanding:
It is really important with restoring parquet floors that all boards are checked prior to sanding.
- Any protruding boards can work themselves loose during the sanding process
- If boards become loose during the sanding process, they can easily be damaged
- Any damaged boards will likely need replacement
- Replacement of boards needs need to take into account size, shape and thickness (this is not always easy) and boards may need to be adjusted to fit
As you can see preparation is therefore extremely important. All of these steps can be avoided with careful preparation. This may be time consuming, but it really is worthwhile.
When discussing how to finish the boards, it was decided that they should look dark and aged. Although dark, the products we used ensured full protection and longevity. Once completed, the floor fit seamlessly into the other décor.
