When you are considering wood stain to your floors it is important that you are equipped with valuable information. While a wood stain product will colour your floor, it will not offer protection. It is therefore really important to protect your floors once the staining process is complete.
Another important element is to ensure that you have selected the best product for your floor. As a Company we use PALLMANN wood products. They provide exceptional finishes and offer a versatile product range. Over time we have become very familiar with this range and honestly believe they offer superior results for our sanded floors.
When staining wood floors there are some important things you should do and things you shouldn’t. We have put together the following information in order to summarise these points:
Wood Stain, what you should do:
Complete the necessary preparation with sanding. The intensity of which will depend on the condition of the floor prior to starting. It may be that you need to apply a pre-stain conditioner after the sanding process.
Make sure that you stir or mix the product appropriately. This will redistribute the colour pigments within the tin. If this was not completed it may be that the colour settles to the bottom. If applied without mixing it is likely that your floor will appear uneven and patchy in colour.
Ensure to test the stain that you have chosen. This is best done in an inconspicuous area of your wood floor. Different types of wood and floors will offer variations. Therefore, this step is important to ensure you achieve the colour you desire.
If you wish to achieve a darker colour, this can be done with the application of an additional coat. This will offer richer tones.
When staining wood floors, you should not:
Leave additional wood stain on the floor. Some feel that this is how you would achieve a darker finish. If additional stain is left on the floor it will just later peel off. All unabsorbed finish should be removed.
Apply any further protective finishes before the stain has completely dried. If a wood finish product is applied while the stain is still damp it will likely leave the floor patchy and uneven. All clear finishes should only be applied once the stain is completely dry.
